Getting There

From Tórshavn:

Hire Car

  • All generic hire car companies (Avis, Budget, Europcar) are available from Vágar Airport (Vágar) or Tórshavn city centre (Streymoy)

  • Car hire costs vary substantially and it is usually one of the most significant costs of a trip to the Faroe Islands so it is best to check and compare prices at the time of booking

  • The roads are well surfaced the entire way so a 2WD is fine for the journey

  • The drive takes around 1 hour one-way to Gásadalur

  • The total distance is around 56 km one-way

  • Overall a hire car is the best way to get around the Faroe Islands if its within your budget

Public Bus

  • It is possible to get to Tórshavn to Gasadalur, via public bus on the line 300

  • The bus runs fairly frequently given that its along the airport route

  • More information can be found on the Strandfaraskip Landsins website including timetables

General Tips

  • There is a small carpark in Gásadalur with free parking.

  • The walk is primarily along a sealed path, but it would still be worth wearing sturdy footwear for around the viewpoints as this can get muddy.

  • Remember that the weather is extremely unpredictable in the Faroe Islands so always prepare for rainfall with a rain/windproof jacket.

  • This also means that the visibility can change frequently, therefore if you arrive with dense cloud cover I would recommend waiting a while for it to clear.

  • Overall I would suggest staying in accomodation at Sørvágur for a few days given that it is only 15 minutes away by car to Múlafossur. This will allow you to quickly visit it whenever the weather conditions are ideal.

  • In general ensure you stick to the marked paths and close gates behind you.

  • Take your time driving into the valley itself as the view as you exit the tunnel is quite impressive.

Sørvágsvatn: Whilst on Vagar its worth visiting Sørvágsvatn, which is only an 21 minute drive away. Sørvágsvatn is a dramatic clifftop lake known for its surreal illusion of hovering above the ocean below.

Trøllkonufingur: About a 25-minute drive from Múlafossur Waterfall, this striking sea stack, known as the Witch’s Finger, rises dramatically from the North Atlantic, making it one of the Faroe Islands’ most iconic coastal landmarks.
