Is the Komodo Islands Tour Worth It?
Where are the Komodo Islands?
The Komodo Islands are an archipelago in eastern Indonesia, between the larger islands of Sumbawa and Flores. They lie in East Nusa Tenggara province and form part of the Lesser Sunda Islands.
The archipelago takes its name from Komodo Island, the largest and best-known island in the group. Komodo, Rinca and Padar are among the main islands protected within Komodo National Park, a region known for its rugged landscapes, pink-sand beaches and Komodo dragons.
How to Get to the Komodo Islands
How you get to the Komodo Islands to start your Komodo Islands boat tour comes down to how much time you have and how much you’re willing to spend. The quickest and most common option is to fly to Labuan Bajo, on the western tip of Flores Island, then join a boat tour from there.
If you have more time and budget, you can join a multi-day liveaboard cruise from Bali. This is an all-in-one option, with the cruise itself taking you to Komodo and the surrounding islands as your tour.
Flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo
Direct flights operate from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Bali to Komodo International Airport (LBJ) in Labuan Bajo. The flight takes around 1 hour 15 minutes, making it a quick connection before starting your cruise.
The journey details are:
Departure point: Bali, usually Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS)
Destination: Komodo International Airport, Labuan Bajo (LBJ)
Flight time: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes
Getting to your boat: Arrange a taxi or transfer from the airport, depending on your tour’s departure point
From Labuan Bajo, your boat tour will take you to the islands and stops included in your itinerary
Liveaboard Cruise from Bali to Komodo
If you’d rather make the journey part of your trip, you can join a multi-day liveaboard cruise from Bali to Komodo. The Neptune One is an example which sails east through Lombok, Sumbawa and Flores, with stops for diving, snorkelling and island excursions along the way.
Note however that this is a far more expensive option then flying across and doing a smaller 3 day tour.
The journey details are:
Departure point: Bali
Destination: Labuan Bajo, Flores
Duration: 10 days / 9 nights
Price: From USD 3,550 per person
Vessel: Neptune One
Included: Cabin accommodation, meals, diving and snorkelling, guided excursions, dive guides and equipment, and ranger-guided Komodo dragon treks
This option suits travellers who want to explore more of the islands between Bali and Komodo. The cruise ends in Labuan Bajo, where you can fly back to Bali.
Where to Stay in Labuan Bajo
Labuan Bajo is the main place to stay before starting your Komodo Islands boat tour. It’s the gateway to the harbour and a convenient base for arriving, preparing for your cruise and spending a night before departure. I’d stay in town so you’re close to restaurants, shops and tour operators, then confirm with your cruise company where and when to meet on the day.
The best places to stay in Labuan Bajo are:
Meruorah Komodo Labuan Bajo - This is a modern five-star hotel in the heart of Labuan Bajo, overlooking the marina and within walking distance of the harbour, restaurants and shops. It has a rooftop pool, spa, restaurant and bar, making it a convenient, comfortable base before your cruise.
Sudamala Resort - A more relaxed beachfront resort with spacious suites, private pool villas, gardens and a swimming pool. It’s a good choice if you’d like a quieter, resort-style stay before or after your boat trip, although it’s outside the town centre.
Le Pirate Island Komodo - If you are looking for something different this is a laid-back adults-only escape on a private island, with beachfront accommodation and a focus on swimming, snorkelling and relaxing. It’s about an hour by boat from Labuan Bajo, so it’s best for extending your stay with an island getaway rather than as a practical base immediately before a cruise.
Indonesia Highlights
When to Go on a Komodo Islands Boat Tour
The best time for a Komodo Islands boat tour is generally during the dry season, from April to October. You’re more likely to get clear skies and suitable conditions for island visits, hiking and snorkelling. The Indonesian tourism authority notes that rain during January to March can disrupt boat-trip schedules and I have seen this first hand occuring through group pages.
For a balance of good weather and fewer visitors, consider the shoulder months, such as April, May or October. July and August are popular, so expect more visitors at well-known stops and book your tour and accommodation ahead. The islands are often greener earlier in the dry season, while the landscape becomes drier as the season progresses. To be honest though we went during the dry season and the scenery was still absolutely stunning.
Tours can sometimes still operate in the wetter months, but rain and rougher seas can affect comfort and itineraries, so if possible it would be best to avoid then. Conditions vary, so check with your operator before travelling and be prepared for possible changes to the route.

This Komodo Islands boat tour map shows the route and key stops along the cruise, from Labuan Bajo to the surrounding islands and snorkelling sites. Use it to get a quick overview of where you’ll go during the tour.
Booking a Komodo Islands Boat Tour
Komodo boat tours range from day trips to multi-day cruises, with different boats, routes and levels of comfort. The best option depends on your time and budget, so compare the itinerary, cabin and inclusions before choosing.
Where to Book a Komodo Islands Boat Tour
You can book your Komodo Islands boat tour online before arriving in Labuan Bajo, making it easier to compare itineraries, operators and what’s included.
You can also book in person, as many tour operators along the main street offer trips. These often appeared cheaper than online options, but tours may be booked out, and it can be harder to compare boats and inclusions face to face.
For a multi-day trip or a specific boat, I’d book ahead.
I have outlined some of the best options below:
3-Day Komodo Sailing with Ocean View Cabin- This 3-day, 2-night cruise visits nine stops, including Kelor, Manjarite, Kalong, Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo Island, Manta Point, Taka Makassar and Siaba. Every cabin is on the main or upper deck and has air conditioning, an ocean-facing window and a private bathroom. Park and ranger fees, meals, snorkelling gear and transfers are included, along with trip photos and videos.
3-Day All Inclusive Ocean View Cruise - A 3-day, 2-night Phinisi cruise with nine stops and an ocean-view room. The listing highlights its all-inclusive setup and offers a full refund if you don’t see a Komodo dragon on the ranger-guided walk. Check the tour details to confirm the specific inclusions and cabin option before booking.
3-Day KC Boat Cruise - Sail for three days aboard the KC boat on a locally run cruise with local guides and nine stops around Komodo National Park. Highlights include a ranger-guided walk to look for Komodo dragons, alongside island scenery and snorkelling stops. The tour also includes trip photo documentation, and the operator offers a refund if you don’t see a dragon on the walk.
How Long is the Boat Tour?
I’ve focused on 3-day, 2-night cruises because they give you more time to explore Komodo National Park and see a wider range of its islands, viewpoints and snorkelling spots. They’re a good choice if you want a more in-depth experience of the area.
There are also day-trip options, which usually last around 8–12 hours and visit a selection of the main highlights. Two-day and longer liveaboard cruises are available too, depending on how much time you hav
How Much is a Komodo Islands Boat Tour?
Prices vary depending on the tour length, boat, cabin and whether you join a shared departure or book a private boat.
As a guide, online listings start at around US$90 per person for a day trip and US$300 per person for a 3-day, 2-night cruise. Ocean-view cabins and more comfortable boats can cost more, while private charters are considerably more expensive.
As previously stated a cheaper option would be to get to Labuan Bajo and then try and negotiate on the price with multiple vendors.
Importantly, check what’s included before booking, especially Komodo National Park and ranger fees, meals, snorkelling equipment and transfers. Some tours include these in the price, while others list extra charges or offer different cabin options.
Komodo Islands Boat Tour 3 Day 2 Night Itinerary
Our 3-day, 2-night Komodo Islands boat tour took us to some of the most incredible places in the national park, from sweeping island viewpoints to pink-sand beaches and vibrant snorkelling spots.
This is the route our boat followed and a popular way to explore the area on a multi-day cruise, though stops and their order can vary depending on the operator and conditions.
Day 1: Kelor Island, Manjarite Beach and Kalong Island Bats
Summary: Depart from Labuan Bajo around midday and cruise to Kelor Island for a short but steep hike offering incredible views of the surrounding reefs. Continue cruising to Manjarite Beach a hidden paradise that offers a perfect clear waters ideal for snorkelling. Finish off the afternoon watching thousands of flying foxes emerge from the mangroves of Kalong Island in a spectacular bat exodus, as they take flight against the glowing colours of the sunset.
Accomodation: stay on the boat near Padar Island
Highlights: spend the day exploring Komodo National Park by visiting the small but idealic Kelor Island, snorkelling at Manjarite Beach, and viewing the exodus of flying foxes at Kalong Island.
Kelor Island
Kelor Island is a picturesque first stop on many Komodo boat tours, with a white-sand beach, clear water and a short hike to a scenic viewpoint. The climb takes around 10–15 minutes, but the track is steep and unstable, so wear enclosed shoes if you plan to go up.
You can also swim or snorkel, or browse the small beach market for snacks, drinks and souvenirs. Some tours visit Kelor as part of a sunset cruise.

Arrive: Kelor Island I Google Maps
Cruise duration: 1 hour
Activity duration: 1 hour
Manjarite Beach
Manjarite Beach is a peaceful stop for swimming and snorkelling, with vibrant coral reefs and plenty of marine life just offshore. We also spotted starfish scattered across the seabed. A long, weathered jetty makes a great photo spot, but take care when walking on it.
Depart: Kelor Island
Arrive: Manjarite Beach I Google Maps
Cruise duration: 20 minutes
Activity duration: 1 hour
Kalong Island
Kalong Island is known for the thousands of flying foxes that leave its mangroves around sunset to search for food. You can watch the spectacle from the boat’s upper deck as the bats cross the colourful evening sky. Boats aren’t permitted to land on the island, but watching from the water is a memorable experience.
Several boats gather nearby, and their lights add to the atmosphere as the sun goes down. After sunset, our boat continued through the dark towards Padar Island, where we anchored for the night.

Day 2: Padar Island Sunrise Hike, Pink Beach, Komodo Island and Manta Point
Summary: Wake up before dawn to catch a small boat onto the shores of Padar Island. Complete a short but relatively challenging hike up to the top viewpoint to witness the convergence of the island's rugged, hilly terrain and the three distinct beaches. After the hike back down cruise around to Pink Beach for a snorkel in its crystal clear waters. In the early afternoon arrive at Komodo Island and complete a short walk attempting to spot the famous regions namesake. Lastly snorkel around Manta Point and the Taka Makassar Sand Bank hopefully spotting some manta rays and sea turtles.
Accomodation: Stay on the boat near Kanawa Island
Highlights: complete a hike on Padar Island, visit the famous Pink Beach, go on a Komodo Dragon safari on Komodo Island, snorkel at Manta Point and Taka Makassar Sand Bank.
Padar Island Sunrise Hike
The Padar Island sunrise hike is one of the highlights of a Komodo cruise, climbing from the main jetty to a viewpoint over the island’s rugged hills, curved bays and three beaches with pink, black and white sand.
The trail is around 1.5 km each way and takes about 45 minutes each way, with steep sections, dirt paths and stone steps. It’s a moderate hike, but the humidity and crowds at sunrise can make it feel more demanding. Wear enclosed shoes and bring water; there are no facilities on the island.
Depart: Padar Bay

Cruise duration: 15 minutes
Activity duration: 2 hours

Pink Beach
The pink sand at Pink Beach gets its colour from tiny red coral fragments mixed with the white sand. The clear, sheltered water makes it a lovely place to swim and snorkel among colourful fish and coral. I’ve honestly never seen water this blue and clear. There are a few small stalls on the beach, though supplies are limited.

Follow the ranger’s instructions throughout the walk, and allow time to browse the stalls near the end of the trail.

Manta Point Snorkelling
Manta Point is a popular snorkelling and diving site in Komodo National Park, where manta rays are sometimes seen gliding through the water. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and we didn’t spot any mantas during our visit, but the area is also home to turtles, reef sharks, colourful fish and coral.
Nearby, Taka Makassar is a small crescent-shaped sandbank that appears at low tide and is covered by the sea at high tide. After this stop, our boat sailed towards Kanawa Island for the night.

What to Pack for a Komodo Islands Boat Tour
Packing light makes getting on and off the boat much easier. I found a backpack far more practical than a suitcase, especially when moving between the boat and shore. The days can be hot, so pack light clothes and make sure you’re ready for plenty of time in the sun and water.
A few things I was glad to have with me were:
Enclosed shoes for short hikes, plus thongs or sandals for the boat and around Labuan Bajo
Swimwear and a quick-drying towel for the many swimming stops. Towels may be provided, so check with your operator.
Sunscreen, I found it expensive to buy in Indonesia, so I’d bring enough from home
A refillable water bottle and electrolyte supplements to help you stay hydrated in the heat
A power bank for charging your phone between island stops
On our boat, meals and drinking water were provided, but alcoholic drinks weren’t available to buy onboard. We were told we could bring our own, so if you’d like a drink, it’s worth picking some up at a supermarket in Labuan Bajo before departure. The small island shops we saw were more expensive.
Is Going on a Komodo Islands Boat Tour Worth It?
Yes, I’d absolutely recommend a Komodo Islands boat tour.
I found that a 3-day, 2-night cruise gives you time to experience the variety that makes the area so special including rugged island viewpoints, pink-sand beaches, clear water and colourful reefs. It would be much harder to try and fully experience all of this in just a day trip.
The boat trip itself is a big part of the adventure. You can relax on board as you sail between stops, with meals served along the way and time to enjoy the scenery.
Our Experience Komodo Islands Boat Tour
We loved our 3-day, 2-night Komodo Islands boat tour and found the whole experience really easy. There was a great mix of activities and downtime, so we could enjoy each island stop without feeling like we were constantly rushing. The food on board was plentiful, and our boat had a fantastic outdoor lounging area where we could relax and take in the views while sailing between destinations.
Our itinerary began at Kelor Island, where we had time to swim and snorkel, followed by Manjarite Beach and its clear water. That evening, we watched the bats leave Kalong Island at sunset. The next morning, we hiked Padar Island for its panoramic views before visiting Pink Beach and Komodo Island for a ranger-guided walk. We also snorkelled at Manta Point and finished the trip at Kanawa Island.
We’d happily recommend the tour. The combination of beautiful scenery, varied activities, great food and relaxing time on the boat made it one of the highlights of our trip to Indonesia.
