General Tips
The trail begins as the steep hike to Sealy Tarns before continuing beyond into the alpine route toward Mueller Hut.
The first section of the trail is clearly demarcated and consists of a mix between wooden staircases and well cleared rocky pathways.
Beyond Sealy Tarns the track turns into a rock scramble and becomes a lot more physically demanding. So it is a good idea to have a short rest here before starting the steep ascent.
For this reason sturdy waterproof footwear such as hiking boots are recommended for the entirety of the trail.
Ensure you take enough food and water for the duration of the journey, although there are very basic facilities available at the hut.
Note that there is limited phone reception throughout the trail.
Take care at viewpoints, as many are exposed with steep drop-offs and often have no barriers or protective measures in place.
The weather in New Zealand’s mountainous areas can be highly unpredictable, so it’s important to always check conditions before setting out and be prepared for rapid changes at any time.
Be sure to pack a waterproof rain jacket and a warm base layer, as temperatures drop quickly with elevation and conditions can turn cold and exposed near the top.
