Dafalen Peak Hiking Tips
Difficulty
The Dafalen Peak hike, like most in Misool, is relatively short but very steep, with a much higher gradient than standard stairs. Combined with humid conditions and uneven, widely spaced steps, it can feel more demanding than expected.
A basic level of fitness is recommended
Conditions can feel more difficult in heat and humidity
There are seats part way up the stairs to allow you to stop and rest
Safety
Extra care is needed when climbing both up and down. The stairs are actually in a slightly bit better condition then others in the area
Steps can be extremely slippery after rainfall
There is no barriers or railing around the viewpoint so be very cautious of the cliff edge
Supposedly crocodiles have been spotted in the past in the lagoon so be very careful if going for a swim
Best Time to Visit
Early morning is the best time to visit, with cooler temperatures. Late afternoon is also a good option, with softer light and a great spot for a sunset close to the accommodation
The best season to visit Misool is from October to April, when conditions are calmer
Sea conditions are typically more stable during this period, making boat travel easier
What to Pack
The Dafalen hike is short but exposed, with no facilities at the viewpoint. Bringing a few essentials will make the climb more comfortable and safer.
Water: There is nowhere to buy drinking water on the island
Sturdy footwear: Enclosed shoes are recommended for the steep, uneven steps
Rain jacket: Weather in Raja Ampat changes quickly, with frequent rainfall
Karawapop Love Lagoon Photography
Karawapop Love Lagoon is one of the most distinctive viewpoints in Misool, Raja Ampat, known for its naturally formed heart-shaped lagoon viewed from above. Its elevated position makes it particularly well suited to photography, with the lagoon’s shape best captured from both the viewpoint and from above with a drone.
Photography Tips
Once up at the viewing platform there is a further raised section reached via a ladder.
This is a great place to take a photo of the lagoon with a human subject in the foreground.
A drone is highly recommended here, as the full extent of the heart shape is best seen from above.
I would suggest using a CPL filter (Circular Polarizing Lens) on both your drone and DSLR.
It will greatly reduce the glare on the water allowing the natural turquoise blue and green colours to come out.
Another tip to get around this is by shooting slightly under exposed, obviously monitor this according to the weather conditions.
