Kalig Beach Misool Tips

Snorkeling and Marine Life

The beach has a large number of resident baby black tip reef sharks hanging around close to shore in the sandy shallows. Alternatively you can snorkel further out to access the reef.

  • Avoid stepping directly on coral when entering the water

  • Prevents damaging the reef as well as risks to stepping on venemous marine life

Safety

While Kalig Beach is generally calm and sheltered, extra care is needed when spending time in the water or moving around the surrounding rocks.

  • Be mindful of currents or rip tides if swimming further out from the shoreline

  • Watch for boat traffic, especially when snorkeling or swimming away from the main beach

  • Take care when walking on sharp or uneven rocks, particularly if heading toward the viewpoint

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to visit, with cooler temperatures.

  • The best season to visit Misool is from October to April, when conditions are calmer

  • Sea conditions are typically more stable during this period, making boat travel easier

What to Pack

There are no facilities at Kalig Beach so bringing a few essentials will make the experience more comfortable.

  • Water: There is nowhere to buy drinking water on the island

  • Sturdy footwear: Enclosed shoes are reccommended if you intend to walk up to the viewpoint

  • Rain jacket: Weather in Raja Ampat changes quickly, with frequent rainfall

  • Snorkel / Bathers: To make the most of the calm, clear water, with good visibility and reef just offshore

  • Reef Safe Suncreen: Recommended to protect both your skin and the surrounding reef, as sun exposure is strong

Photography Tips

  • There are two sides to the beach area on a peninsula so make sure you check out both.

  • The viewpoint is worth the short walk up to get an elevated view of the beach below.

  • I would suggest using a CPL filter (Circular Polarizing Lens) on you DSLR.

  • It will greatly reduce the glare on the water allowing the natural turquoise blue and green colours to come out.

  • Another tip to get around this is by shooting slightly under exposed, obviously monitor this according to the weather conditions.
