Balbulol Lagoon Hiking Tips

Difficulty

The Balbulol Lagoon viewpoint hike is short but incredibly steep, with a much higher gradient than standard stairs. Combined with humid conditions and uneven, widely spaced steps, it can feel more demanding than expected.

  • A basic level of fitness is recommended

  • Very steep stairs

  • Conditions can feel more difficult in heat and humidity

Safety

Extra care is needed when climbing both up and down, particularly due to the poor condition of the wooden steps. Many sections are uneven, worn, or broken, with limited support in places.

  • Steps can be extremely slippery after rainfall and have large gaps between them

  • The viewpoint has no barriers or railing with a steep drop-off on all sides

  • The ground around the viewpoint is also extremely uneven and would cut bare feet

Best Time to Visit

Early morning is the best time to visit, with cooler temperatures. Late afternoon is also a good option, with softer light and fewer visitors.

  • The best season to visit Misool is from October to April, when conditions are calmer

  • Sea conditions are typically more calm during this period, making boat travel easier

What to Pack

The Balbulol hike is short but exposed, with no facilities at the viewpoint. Bringing a few essentials will make the climb more comfortable and safer.

  • Water: There is nowhere to buy drinking water on the island

  • Sturdy footwear: Enclosed shoes are recommended for the steep, uneven steps

  • Rain jacket: Weather in Raja Ampat changes quickly, with frequent rainfall

  • Snorkel / Bathers: The lagoon is the perfect place for a swim to cool off after the hike

Balbulol Lagoon Photography

Balbulol is one of the most distinctive viewpoints in Misool, Raja Ampat, known for towering karst structures. The viewpoint itself offers an incredible vantage point to get a great shot of lagoon below and the karst structures.

Balbulol Photography Tips

  • The viewpoint is fantastic for capturing the iconic shot of the Balbulol karst towers, however due to the uneven ground you are quite restricted regarding the possible angles.

  • A drone is definitely the most effective way to shoot the wider area and get the vivid contrast of the green vegetation covered towers and the aqua water below.

  • I would suggest using a CPL filter (Circular Polarizing Lens) on both your drone and DSLR.

  • It will greatly reduce the glare on the water allowing the natural turquoise blue and green colours to come out.

  • Another tip to get around this is by shooting slightly under exposed, dependent on the time of day.
