How to Get to Misool Raja Ampat, Indonesia: Complete Guide
Planning a trip to Misool Raja Ampat, Indonesia? Due to its remote location getting to Misool can feel a little confusing at first. This complete guide covers everything you need to know about reaching Misool, including flights to Sorong, ferries, private speedboats, liveaboards, travel costs, and useful tips for visiting one of Indonesia’s most spectacular island destinations.
Where is Misool, Raja Ampat
Misool is one of the four main islands that make up the Raja Ampat archipelago in Southwest Papua, Indonesia. Located in the far southern region of Raja Ampat between the Seram Sea and the Banda Sea, Misool is surrounded by hundreds of small limestone karst islands, hidden lagoons, pristine beaches, and vibrant coral reefs.
The island sits approximately 170 kilometres south of Sorong and around 160 kilometres south of Waisai, the capital of Raja Ampat. Compared to the more visited northern regions of Raja Ampat, Misool feels far more remote and untouched, with fewer tourists and limited infrastructure spread across the surrounding islands.
Flying to Sorong
The first step to reaching Misool Raja Ampat is flying to Sorong, the main gateway to Raja Ampat. Almost all trips to Misool begin here, whether you plan on traveling by public ferry, private speedboat, or liveaboard.
Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) in Sorong is well connected to several major cities across Indonesia, with most travelers flying through Bali, Jakarta, or Makassar before continuing onwards to Raja Ampat.
When booking flights to Sorong, I’d recommend checking both Google Flights and Skyscanner to compare routes, prices, and layover times. Flight schedules in eastern Indonesia can change regularly, so it’s important to double check routes before booking and its usually best to leave buffer time between connections and avoid tight same-day transfers where possible.
Flights from Bali to Sorong
Bali is one of the most common starting points for travelers visiting Misool Raja Ampat, especially for international visitors arriving in Indonesia.
It’s important to note that while many flights are sold online as “non-stop”, they still include a short stopover in Makassar.
This is typically the case for the regular Lion Air service, which usually departs Bali early in the morning before continuing onwards to Sorong via Makassar.
Whilst taking this flight we were not required to collect our checked in bags at Makassar instead they went all the way through to Sorong.
In our experience, flying with Lion Air was both the fastest and cheapest option for reaching Sorong from Bali.

Flights from Jakarta to Sorong
Jakarta offers some of the best flight connections to Sorong, including several direct flights operating throughout the week. For travelers already visiting Indonesia, flying through Jakarta is often one of the easiest and most reliable ways to reach Raja Ampat.
There are currently two truly direct options when flying from Jakarta to Sorong, with daily flights operated by both Garuda Indonesia and Batik Air.
Alternatively there are also semi-direct flights with Lion Air which include a stopover in Makassar
For a tiny bit more on the price, the direct flight with either Garuda Indonesia or Batik Air is the best option to save time
Note that all of the flights tend to depart late and travel is through the middle of the night.

Overnighting in Sorong
For most travelers visiting Misool Raja Ampat, spending at least one night in Sorong is highly recommended. Flight schedules, ferry departures, and private boat transfers often don’t align perfectly, making an overnight stay the easiest way to avoid stressful connections and unexpected delays.
Overnighting in Sorong also helps break up what can otherwise be a very long travel journey across Indonesia, especially for those arriving from Bali or Jakarta late in the evening. Most hotels are located close to the airport, making transfers simple and convenient before continuing onwards to Raja Ampat the following day.
In addition to being the gateway to Misool, Sorong is also the main transit hub for reaching the northern regions of Raja Ampat via Waisai, including popular islands such as Kri, Gam, Waigeo, and Arborek.
Where to Stay in Sorong
Most travelers only stay in Sorong for one night before continuing onwards into wider Raja Ampat so staying somewhere close to the airport and the port is usually the best option. Sorong has a good range of accommodation available, from simple budget hotels to more comfortable airport hotels with restaurants, pools, and airport transfers.
Some of the most popular hotels for travelers transiting through Raja Ampat include Swiss-Belhotel Sorong, ASTON Sorong Hotel & Conference Center, and Vega Prime Hotel and Convention. These hotels are well located for both airport transfers and ferry departures, making them convenient options before continuing onwards to Misool or Waisai.

Traveling from Sorong to Misool
After making your way to Sorong, the next step is traveling onwards to Misool in the far southern region of Raja Ampat. Due to Misool’s remote location, there are currently three main ways to reach the islands: public ferries, private speedboat transfers, and liveaboards.
For independent travelers and backpackers, the public ferry is usually the cheapest option and operates in both overnight and fast ferry services depending on the schedule. Private speedboats are significantly faster and more convenient, although they are also far more expensive and are commonly arranged through homestays, resorts, or tour operators.
Another popular way to visit Misool is by liveaboard, with many Raja Ampat diving and island-hopping trips including the southern islands as part of multi-day itineraries. Each option offers a very different experience depending on your budget, travel style, and the amount of time you have available in Raja Ampat.
Public Ferry from Sorong to Misool
Booking the ferry from Sorong to Misool island can be one of the trickiest parts of planning a trip to Raja Ampat, as schedules are limited, can change frequently, and information online is often outdated. The best way to check the latest timetable is usually through your homestay or resort, who can often also help arrange tickets and cabin bookings.
Ferries are sometimes delayed due to weather and sea conditions, so it is worth arriving early and allowing buffer time in your itinerary. If taking the overnight ferry, booking a private cabin in advance is highly recommended, as ferries can be crowded, noisy, and smoking is common in shared areas.

The KM Fajar Indah overnight ferry currently runs only once per week, departing from Pelabuhan Rakyat Sorong (Sorong Public Harbour)

Private Speedboat from Sorong to Misool
For travelers looking for the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Misool, private speedboat transfers are by far the best option. Unlike the public ferry, speedboats operate on flexible schedules and can usually be arranged directly through your homestay, resort, tour operator, or private charter company.
Most private transfers depart directly from Sorong and travel straight to the southern islands of Misool, significantly reducing travel time compared to the ferry. Depending on sea conditions, the journey usually takes around 4–6 hours, although this can vary depending on your final destination within Misool.
Prices vary dramatically depending on group size and destination and your negotiation skills, but are estimated to be between 15,000,000 and 30,000,000 IDR for the boat which can be split amongst travellers.
Liveaboards
One of the most popular ways to experience Misool Raja Ampat is by liveaboard, particularly for divers wanting to explore the remote reefs and islands scattered throughout southern Raja Ampat. Most liveaboards depart directly from Sorong and follow routes through both northern and southern Raja Ampat, with many itineraries including iconic destinations in Misool such as Balbulol Lagoon, Karawapop Lagoon, and some of the region’s best dive and snorkel sites.
Liveaboards are generally the most comfortable and convenient way to explore Raja Ampat, combining transport, accommodation, meals, diving, snorkeling, and island hopping into one multi-day trip. Most itineraries range between 7–12 days and are suitable for both divers and snorkelers depending on the operator and route.
Prices vary significantly depending on the level of comfort and inclusions, with budget liveaboards generally costing around 15,000,000–25,000,000 IDR, mid-range options ranging between 30,000,000–60,000,000 IDR, and luxury liveaboards often exceeding 70,000,000 IDR. Due to the popularity of Raja Ampat during peak season, many liveaboards book out several months in advance, especially the more affordable options.
Many Raja Ampat liveaboards can be booked online through the LiveAboard website, where you can compare operators, itineraries, prices, cabin types, and availability based on your travel dates.
Best Way to Visit Misool Raja Ampat
The best way to visit Misool Raja Ampat ultimately depends on your budget, travel style, and how much flexibility you want once you arrive in the region. While reaching Misool takes a little more planning than many destinations in Indonesia, there are several different ways to explore the southern islands depending on whether you prioritise comfort, diving, independence, or budget travel.
For most independent travelers, flying to Sorong before continuing onwards by ferry or speedboat is usually the most practical option. However, for divers or travelers with a larger budget, liveaboards offer one of the easiest and most comfortable ways to experience Raja Ampat.
Best Flight Option to Sorong
Although the journey from Bali to Sorong is longer, it generally offers much better flight schedules compared to other routes within Indonesia. Most flights operate during the day, making the journey feel far less exhausting than the overnight flights commonly departing from Jakarta.
One of the biggest advantages of flying from Bali is that arrival times often align well with the overnight ferry from Sorong to Misool, making it possible to continue onwards without needing to spend multiple nights in Sorong.
Best Option for Divers
If diving is your main priority and budget is less of a concern, visiting Misool by liveaboard is arguably the easiest overall option. Liveaboards combine transport, accommodation, diving, snorkeling, and island hopping into one trip, removing the need to separately organise ferries and transfers throughout Raja Ampat.
However, liveaboards generally operate on fixed schedules with larger groups, offering less flexibility once the trip begins.
Best Option for Independent Travelers
For most independent travelers, the public ferry remains the most practical and affordable way to reach Misool. Both the fast ferry and overnight ferry operate from Sorong depending on the schedule, with onward longboat transfers commonly arranged from Yellu Harbour to accommodation throughout the region.
While the journey takes longer, the ferry offers significantly more flexibility for travelers planning to stay independently throughout Misool.
Fastest and Most Comfortable Option
If budget is not a major concern, private speedboat transfers are by far the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Misool from Sorong. This option is especially ideal for groups, private resort stays, or travelers with limited time in Raja Ampat, as costs can often be shared between multiple people.
Spending one night in Sorong before continuing onwards by private speedboat is usually the least stressful overall option.
Best Budget-Friendly Option
For budget travelers, the overnight public ferry is generally the cheapest way to reach Misool. While schedules can be limited and the journey is significantly longer, securing a private cabin makes the experience far more comfortable and is usually the preferred option for independent travelers.

The total cost of visiting Misool Raja Ampat can vary dramatically depending on how you choose to travel from Sorong. While public ferries are by far the cheapest option, private speedboats and liveaboards offer significantly more comfort and convenience at a much higher price point.

Compared to many other destinations in Indonesia, Misool can be relatively expensive due to its remote location and limited transport options. Flights, ferries, private speedboats, accommodation, and liveaboards all add to the overall cost, particularly for travelers wanting more comfort or flexibility throughout Raja Ampat.
In general, if you are planning on staying at a homestay such as Yamnini where meals are included, your biggest expense will likely be the island-hopping day trips throughout Misool. However, these costs can usually be shared between travelers, so it’s well worth organising a group together where possible.
What is the best time to visit Misool?
The best time to visit Misool Raja Ampat is generally between October and April, when sea conditions are usually calmer and visibility for diving and snorkeling is often at its best. However, weather in Raja Ampat can remain relatively unpredictable year-round, especially in more remote southern regions.
We visited at the end of March into early April and experienced exceptional weather throughout the trip, with calm seas, clear skies, and surprisingly few other travelers across many of the islands and lagoons.
Is Misool better than northern Raja Ampat?
Both regions are incredible but offer slightly different experiences. Northern Raja Ampat is generally easier to access and is home to famous locations such as Piaynemo, Kri, and Arborek, while Misool feels far more remote, untouched, and dramatic.
In my opinion, unless your sole purpose for visiting Raja Ampat is scuba diving, which is generally more accessible, affordable, and professionally established in the north, then the scenery throughout Misool is on an entirely different scale. The towering limestone karst islands, hidden turquoise lagoons, remote white sand beaches, and untouched landscapes throughout southern Raja Ampat feel far more wild and spectacular.
Some of the most incredible places in Misool include Balbulol Lagoon, Harfat Peak, Karawapop Lagoon, Dafalen Lagoon, and Kalig Beach, all of which showcase the dramatic scenery that makes the southern region so unique.

Do you need cash in Misool?
Yes. There are no ATMs throughout most of Misool, so it is important to bring enough cash before leaving Sorong. Many homestays and smaller operators only accept cash payments, and phone signal or internet access can often be limited throughout the islands.
Is there phone signal in Misool?
Phone signal throughout Misool is generally limited and can vary significantly depending on your location and accommodation. Some homestays, such as Yamnini, have Starlink internet which is often only switched on during the evenings, while nearby villages may occasionally have limited phone signal or basic WiFi. However, internet speeds throughout Misool are usually slow and far less reliable compared to other parts of Indonesia.
Can you visit Misool independently?
Yes. While many travelers visit Misool as part of liveaboards or organised tours, it is also possible to visit independently using either the public ferry or a private speedboat from Sorong. Independent travel does require significantly more planning due to the limited ferry schedules, remote location, and lack of reliable online information, but it is absolutely achievable.
Most independent travelers stay at local homestays throughout Misool, with many accommodations helping arrange ferry tickets, longboat transfers from Yellu Harbour, island-hopping tours, and snorkeling trips once you arrive. Compared to liveaboards, traveling independently also offers far more flexibility, allowing you to move at a slower pace, spend longer in specific areas, and organise private trips throughout the region.
My biggest recommendation would be contacting your homestay as early as possible and having them help organise your transport and transfers throughout the trip. In most cases, they are also the most reliable source of up-to-date information regarding ferry schedules, departure times, and local sea conditions throughout Misool.
